The Shopkeeper is a trusted member of the retail team and helps shape the daily experience of The Old Yew shop floor. Working closely with the Assistant Manager and Store Manager, you help maintain the health of the plants, the beauty of the space, and the quality of the customer experience.

This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys the rhythm of shopkeeping: caring for plants, helping customers find the right plant for their space, repotting, merchandising displays, and supporting the steady flow of work that keeps a well-run shop functioning. You take pride in the details—healthy foliage, well-watered plants, thoughtful presentation, and a store that feels calm, organized, and inviting.

The ideal candidate has a genuine interest in plants, a strong sense of responsibility for the condition of the shop, and the ability to work independently while supporting the broader retail team.

Responsibilities

• Support the Assistant Manager and Store Manager in executing daily shop priorities and maintaining smooth operations on the retail floor.
• Provide thoughtful customer service, assisting customers with plant, planter, and plant care product selection.
• Offer practical plant care guidance and answer customer questions about plant health, watering, light requirements, and maintenance.
• Perform routine plant care including watering, grooming, pruning, pest monitoring, and general plant maintenance.
• Assist with repotting plants for customers and preparing plants for sale.
• Maintain the overall health and presentation of plants on the sales floor.
• Help maintain clean, organized, and visually compelling plant and product displays.
• Assist with restocking merchandise and maintaining an orderly sales floor.
• Support receiving and processing plant and product deliveries.
• Assist with packing and preparing online orders for shipment or local delivery.
• Ensure plants and products are packaged safely and accurately for transport.
• Help maintain organization in storage and back-of-house areas.
• Communicate plant care concerns, inventory needs, and customer feedback to the broader retail team.
• Maintain a calm, welcoming, and design-driven retail environment consistent with The Old Yew brand.

Qualifications

• Retail experience required, especially in boutique or specialty retail environments.
• Interest in plants, gardening, or horticulture and plant knowledge strongly preferred.
• Comfortable repotting plants and handling soil and plant materials.
• Organized, dependable, and attentive to detail.
• Able to work independently and take initiative during shifts.
• Comfortable lifting plants, soil, and merchandise (up to ~40 lbs).

Schedule

• Part-time position (up to 30 hours per week)
• Weekend availability required
