Why Is My Black Olive Tree Dropping Leaves?

Sep 10, 2026

If you just brought home a black olive tree (Bucida buceras) and it's already shedding leaves, take a breath — this is one of the most common and least alarming things a new plant owner can experience with this species.

It's an Acclimation Process, Not a Crisis

Black olive trees are typically grown in greenhouses before they reach a store or your home. Greenhouse conditions — steady humidity, bright and even light, controlled temperature — are very different from a typical home environment. When the tree moves into your space, it often responds by dropping the leaves that were grown for greenhouse life, and slowly growing in new leaves that are better suited to your home's actual light and humidity.

It can look dramatic. A tree that seemed full and healthy at the store may lose a significant portion of its leaves within the first few weeks in a new home. That's usually the plant adjusting, not dying.

What You Should (and Shouldn't) Do

  • Don't panic and overwater. A common instinct when a plant is losing leaves is to give it more water, but that's rarely the actual issue here, and overwatering can create new problems on top of the acclimation stress.

  • Keep light and watering consistent. Sudden changes on top of an already-stressed plant make the transition harder, not easier.

  • Be patient. New growth typically appears once the tree settles in, and it can take several weeks to a couple of months for the tree to look full again.

When to Actually Worry

If new growth never appears, or if you're also seeing soft, mushy stems, black spotting, or a foul smell from the soil, that points to a different issue — like root rot — rather than normal acclimation. That's the point to look more closely (or ask us).

In Short

Leaf drop in a new black olive tree is usually a normal adjustment period, not a sign of failure. Give it consistent care and time before assuming the worst.
